Holmes Shirley Law provides a full range of small business legal services. These services include: entity formation, contract and lease drafting and review, operating agreements, independent contractor or employee agreements, management training and employee handbook development.  The firm also helps small companies with exit and/or succession planning, which is a critical but often over-looked piece of a successful small business.

Business legal services are tailored to the unique needs of each business, whether the client desires a la carte review or a legal firm to be retained on an on-going basis.

How We Are Different

If you are the kind of business owner who wants to make a real difference in the world while you are in business and leave behind a body of work that continues to do good for your family, your clients or customers, and the world after you are gone, you have come to the right place.

Most lawyers simply don’t see law the same way we do. In fact, you won’t find a lot of people who see law the way we do.

Why is that? It’s because the traditional law business model is flawed.  It incentives lawyers and law firms to spend more time on matters (since they are billing on an hourly basis), increase conflict (the more conflict there is, the longer the engagement), and constantly focus on the next new client.  Plus, the world has shifted and quite a lot of legal work has become commoditized into online legal drafting software, documents on demand and do it yourself lawyering.

Lawyers tried to compete and became mere shadows of themselves – document drafters, doing one off transactions for clients, such as incorporating business or reviewing a single contract, and then hunting for the next new client.

Not us.  We build lifetime relationships with our clients. Because a legal relationship not built upon a lifetime foundation is worthless.  If you want a transaction, go online and find a document drafting service. If you want to start a great relationship that will help you move your awesome idea into a revenue generating business, LIFT your existing business to the next level of excellence, and prepare you and your business to leave behind a legacy of significance, you have come to the right place.

We serve winners and those who intend to be.  Welcome.

Small Business Membership Program

At most business planning law firms the relationship ends when you sign your incorporation documents.  At Holmes Shirley Law, we see signing your incorporation documents as the beginning of our relationship with your business.

Over time, your business will change and grow; your ownership structure may change; we know for sure that the law will change.   Your business documents must accommodate all of these changes in order to make sure your business is on track for growth and continued success.

If your business does not have annual meetings, maintain meeting minutes, have agreements, and is not properly updated and maintained over time, your legal documents quickly become outdated, if not blatantly worthless… worth no more than the paper they were printed on.   The costs of failing to update your legal documents regularly are typically far greater than keeping everything current.

However, we know it can be difficult for a business to predict its “legal needs” and therefore budget for these services.  Review of your standard documents, such as employee handbooks, management and employment training, leases, operating agreements, buy and sell agreements, etc, tend to get overlooked in the budgeting process and therefore are not done regularly, if at all.

To help you make sure your entity is maintained properly, we offer Business Membership Programs. Through our regular updating programs, we take care of all the little details, such as compliance with the latest laws and regulations, so you can stay creative and expansive.

Our membership programs  are designed so that we can proactively monitor the activities of your business on a monthly, quarterly or bi-annual basis.  By doing this, we can stay on top of your business’ legal, insurance, financial and tax details so you can relax and be more creative, more expansive and live more into the possibilities for your business knowing everything else is handled.
